Mary K. Stein, President of MD Communications in Tucson, Arizona, originally thought she’d be working on a newspaper after graduating from the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas. While waiting for a job on the Topeka Capitol, she took a temporary job at American Family Physician magazine in Kansas City. This “summer job” job turned into a longtime career in medical writing and editing, first with three national medical journals (American Family Physician, Current Prescribing, and Diagnosis magazines), and then with the founding of MD Communications , a freelance healthcare editorial company, in 1984. Since that time, Mary Kay has worked with physicians, publishing and marketing companies, and pharmaceutical and medical device companies on a wide variety of projects, including marketing and patient information materials, documents, newsletters and monographs. She has been managing editor of Eating Disorders Review since its founding in 1990. Mary Kay is the author of a series of continuing education textbooks for nurses, including Caring for the AIDS Patient, Procedures for Treatment of AIDS-related Infections, Lifetime Weight Control: Patient Counseling, Cardiovascular Disease: Evaluation and Prevention, and Substance Abuse: Guidelines for Professionals. Her latest book is A Life in the Law: A Woman Lawyer’s Life in Post-World War II Albuquerque, New Mexico, published by Sunstone Press, Santa Fe, New Mexico, in October 2014. She has been a member of the American Medical Writers Association since 1984.
